Well, here are some tips that you can use to detect pool leak yourself:
Pool Leak Detection with Bucket
One easy method for the detection of water leaks in the swimming pool is to use the bucket. The size of the bucket must be at least 5 gallons.
To use this method, first of all you need to turn off any auto-refill device that you may have installed in the pool plumbing. With that you also need to turn off the recirculation pump.
Now put a bucket of 5 gallons on the second step of the pool (if water level in the pool is up to the second step) and fill the bucket with the water.
Make sure that the level of water inside the pool and inside the bucket should be same. Also, don’t forget to add a brick or a heavy material so that bucket stays at its position. After inserting the brick, water levels in and out should be equal.
Now mark the bucket from the outside and inside and wait for 24 hours.
Next day check both the levels, level of pool and level of water in the bucket slightly goes down but they are even, then it is just water evaporation. But if you see a considerable change in the water level of the pool, and it decreases a lot from the level of the bucket then you have a problem of pool leak.
Pool Leak Detection with Tape Marking
Another simple and easy way to detect the pool leak is a tape marking. Use a tape or a grease pencil and mark the pool wall at the level of the water.
Turn off the circulating pump and any auto-refill pump or device and then wait for the 24 hours.
After 24 hours if you notice a level drop for more than 6 cm or ¼ inches, then you likely have a pool leak
Detect Location of the Leak
Now, after you know that pool leak has been indicated with the above two tests, you can determine the location of the leak as well.
It is also easy. Turn off the pumps for few days and see at what point water stops dropping. If it stops dropping at some point it means you have a leak in the pool wall.
If the water don’t stops and you lose all the water as it stops at the skimmer opening, then it means there might be leak in the skimmer, or the pipes. In this case there might be a leak in the filtration system as well.
If you have a Vinyl liner pool and water is dropping rapidly then stop the test and start adding water in the pool again by turning on the pumps and call the pool professional because a liner pool need to have water all the time.
So, these are some easy ways for the detection of water leaks that can be done you. We hope these methods would be useful for you.
