Did you know that 84% of the world’s energy comes from fossil fuels! This is according to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2020. The 84% is made up collectively of oil (33%), natural gas (24%) and coal (27%).
While renewable energy is growing in popularity, oil and gas still remain the dominant forms of energy. We cannot overstate the value of these significant energy commodities because without it, our world would cease to work. Vehicles would come to a standstill, houses would be without electricity which is generated through the burning of coal or oil. To put it simply, the world as we know it would cease to function.
However, in order for the world to get its hands on much needed energy, oil and natural gas companies must engage in oil and gas offshore drilling.
What Is Crude Oil and Natural Gas
Before we can investigate the ingenious methods that are often employed to search and capture precious energy resources, it is imperative to understand what crude oil and natural gas are.
According to Investopedia,”black gold” or crude oil as it is commonly known, is a completely organic resource that is extracted from deep into the earth and it can be used for all sorts of purposes including jet fuel! On the other hand, natural gas is a naturally occurring mixture of varying compounds, mainly Methane. Similar to crude oil, it is often found within the earth.
Oil & Gas Offshore Drilling Explained
Since both crude oil and natural gas are found deep within the earth, oil and gas companies must explore potential reservoirs of these precious energy resources before taking steps to retrieve them.
One means is through offshore drilling. Offshore drilling is the process when drilling equipment is applied to rich reservoirs of crude oil and natural gas that can be found deep under the surface of the seabed. Not to be confused with onshore drilling, which is done on land instead of in the ocean.
Once a location has been determined, a powerful drill is used to burrow deep into the seabed. Energy Education suggests that this drilling process is a long-drawn process, sometimes taking several weeks or even months to complete!
According to Rigzone Energy Network, once the drilling process has been completed, a casing is added. This is an essential part of offshore drilling because the walls of a newly minted drilling site will not be able to last for very long. The casing also ensures that no foreign pollutants enter the drill site.
The sheer pressure that is formed from the underwater collection of crude oil and natural gas will force precious resources up and out. However this force will naturally wane after some time. To counteract this, Energy Education suggests that oil and gas companies will syphon either water or gas to exert greater pressure that will eventually force the crude oil to rise to the surface during this stage. Piezoresistive pressure sensors and transmitters are normally applied for oil and gas pressure measurement through the predetermined drillsite.
With the precious reservoir tapped of its natural and infinite resources, the oil is then sent via oil tankers or submarine pipelines (which refer to pipelines that sit on the seabed) to treatment centres on land.
