There are no rules when it comes to interior design – it’s all about what makes you happy!
Unless you’re trying to get your interior design packages featured in a magazine or design book, that is. While there are no rules when it comes to decorating, there are some guidelines that every designer should follow. Keeping these simple rules of interior designing in mind will help you create a cohesive and intentional space.
So, what exactly makes for good interior design? Our resident home stager, Stacy Fraser, shares her best tips on how to achieve great results by following five basic rules. Read them here:
1) Keep Color Palettes Consistent
2) Create Visual Flow
3) Expand Your Space Through Light
4) Allow For Personal Touches
5) Consider Functionality
The easiest way to ruin a perfectly good interior design project is by creating a space that looks like there was an “oops” moment. In other words, something was left out or forgotten.
While it may be okay for you to add a contrast pillow in the living room, your guests will probably notice if everything else isn’t cohesive! To avoid this mistake, choose one color palette and stick with it throughout the entire home (i.e., monochromatic, analogous or complementary).
No matter what type of decorating style you fall into – traditional, modern or transitional , try to keep all your decor elements within one cohesive color family. Also make sure your furniture texture s match (i.e., don’t mix velvet with leather) and consider adding elements of the same color to every room for additional harmony (example: adding a red planter full of plants in each room).
Another important aspect while interior designing is creating visual flow. Using the same design concept throughout different rooms will create fluidity. For example, using drapery hardware that’s cohesive or even the same color will tie everything together. Are you looking for office designing?
