In the morning, check the water level again, if no one used the water during night and still water level is lower than the marked location then it is a clear sign of the water leak.
Also, in most of the cases, the water tank leaks from the sides. If it is leaked from the side, you will see water on the floor. There is no since involved in detecting this type of water tank leak.
Now you just need to repair the leak by calling an expert who is certified for the maintenance of water tanks at homes or business locations.
If the water tank is leaked from the top of it, then no water leak will be there, but there is a chance that dirt, dust, bacteria, leaves, ash and other impurities will enter into the water tank and will pollute your water.
So, make sure that your water tank is not leaked from the top of it and make sure that it is properly sealed.

Now, put a few gallons of water in the tank and add some bleach in it. Then clean the walls of the tank with that mixture of bleach and water. Empty the water tank again. Fill it and empty again so that no bad chemicals remain in the tank and now your water tank is safe to refill it again.
