Children are naturally curious and, a side-effect of this is that they have an uncanny knack for becoming loud and, if you attempt to calm them they can quickly become aggressive, leaving you as a parent with a fraught situation. Many parents react by shouting to restore order.
However, research suggests that this increases the likelihood of a child developing behavioural and mental health problems.
A better approach is to learn how to peacefully create calm. It’s not as difficult as you may think:
Time Out
When you’re feeling stressed out with your child it’s easy to raise your voice and restore order by shouting. Unfortunately, this isn’t a viable long-term strategy. They are likely to return the favour in the future.
Instead, if you feel stressed then give yourself a time out. That means taking five minutes of peace while you take long deep breaths and calm yourself.
Use A Child care facility
A good child care facility, such as this child care Liverpool, won’t just keep you a little time to yourself. They will help the child to grow mentally and physically, improving their understanding of the world and emphasizing the common values you share.
Perhaps one of the best things about child care is that you gain quality time with your child. You don’t have to focus on learning certain things, the child care centre will do that, you simply get to bond with your child.
Assess The Issue
Having calmed your mind you’ll be ready to assess what is really happening. Remove your child carefully from the stressful situation and ask them to take a minute, as you have just done.
You can then calmly tell your child you are going to talk, they need to listen. They can have their input when you’re finished. Explain why you have become stressed and the fact that you have taken a time out. Then, give them the opportunity to explain why they were getting so excited.
This will allow you to explain why their actions were wrong or inappropriate. By keeping calm they will see they don’t need to react aggressively either.
Calm Together
Develop a simple code word that tells your child they need to calm down. When you say the word you instantly head to a specific place and practice relaxation techniques. This will help you and your child relax and allow you to talk about any issues. It’s surprising how effective this can be.
Take A Step Back
If you’ve tried the above and are still struggling to peacefully restore calm then you need to take a step back and think about the bigger picture. The bottom line is simple, how important is the matter you’re stressing about in the grand scheme of things?
For example, if the world was going to end this week would what your child is doing really make any difference? The answer is usually no and explains why sometimes you should just let things go, pace will be restored.
