CAR T-cell therapy is a cancer treatment in which a patient’s own modified white blood cells are used to destroy cancer cells.
When T cells, which ordinarily patrol the circulation for pathogens and other intruders, fail to recognize cancer as a foreign cell, doctors may turn to CAR T. This occurs when T lymphocytes lack the specific proteins needed to connect to the tumor and assault it.
Doctors remove T cells from the body before starting CAR T-cell treatment. Then they add a gene that causes T cells to develop unique proteins on their surface called CARs (chimeric antigen receptors) that can cling to cancer cells.
The procedure:-
The procedure begins with the collection of blood from the cancer patient. T cells are isolated and extracted from the blood during this procedure, and the remaining blood is returned to the body. This operation, also known as leukapheresis or apheresis, is analogous to the process of giving blood donations. T cells are the body’s major killer cells. These are the type of white blood cell in the immune system. They defend the body by killing cancerous cells and other aberrant cells.
T cells, on the other hand, don’t always recognize cancer cells or are unable to completely destroy all of them in the body. The next step is to genetically change T cells to boost their cancer-killing capabilities. This is carried out in a specialized lab. Special receptors have been added to the surface of the transformed T cells.
These receptors, known as chimeric antigen receptors (CAR), allow T cells to recognize cancer cells more effectively, activate them, and kill them. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells are the new name for these modified T cells. After then, the CAR T cells are cultivated in a separate facility until millions of them are generated.
After this, When the patient is given a short course of chemotherapy, the chances of the new CAR T cells being accepted and not being destroyed by the immune system when they are returned to the body increase. Finally, the CAR T cells are instilled back into the patient via a blood infusion. CAR T cells continue to grow once inside the body.
Why choose CAR-t Surgery in Spain?
While Spain is one of the best sites for CAR-T because of its high-quality facilities and professionals, just a few other countries provide comparable healthcare for the procedure. Many hospitals incorporate the cost of a patient’s pre-surgicaltests in their treatment plans. The cost of CAR-t Surgery in Spain often includes hospitalization, surgery, nursing, medicine, and anesthesia. In Spain, a longer stay in the hospital due to a longer healing, a new diagnosis, or complications after surgery could increase the cost of CAR-T.
