Interpretation is same as the translation the only difference is that translation is done in a textual arena while interpretation is performed verbally. An interpreter works with the source language and converts it into the targeted language delivering the same tone, gestures, emotions, tone and semantics. But there is one thing in common that us that is the challenging nature of both the tasks. There exist many ways to interpret but three are most used. The first is simultaneous interpretation. The second is consecutive interpretation and the last one is whimpered interpretation. We will explain each in detail below:
- Simultaneous Interpretation:
This type of interpreter translates each sentence spoken in the source language simultaneously into the target language that the gap between the translation is few seconds. This method does not disturb the flow of the speaker as he continues his speech as normal conversation while the professionally trained interpreters convey the essence of his speech in the targeted language in real-time. Simultaneous interpreters need to be highly trained, bilingual, and fast thinkers. Usually, they work in pairs while switching their turn. Interpretation services in UAE are well known for this task. The interpreter listens to the speaker from a headset and translates it while the audience can hear interpreted speech using the receiver set at their specific channel. Simultaneous interpretation became possible due to the invention of technology, headsets, microphones, soundproof booth, and efficient communication channels like the radio. Without technology, this interpretation might not be possible. This type of interpretation is a tiring task mostly done in business conferences and sermons.
- consecutive Interpretation:
inconsecutive way of interpretation, the translation is done when the speaker is finished saying his passage of speech. the speaker must wait for the interpreter to translate the said sentences before continuing his remaining speech an ideal gap is 40 to 60 words. consecutive interpreters need fast notes taking abilities and an excellent memory as they must convey the exact expression, intonation, and sentiments of the speaker. This type of interpretation is a time-consuming strategy and is used in education, law, entertainment, and human services. the translation can be done in-person or remotely using audio, video calls but the covid-19 pandemic has increased the demand for remote interpretation services. furthermore, if you are thinking of switching from translator role to interpretation, this type can be the best initiative for you. In contrary to simultaneous interpreting, consecutive do not require modern technology and can be worked with a notepad and a pen.
- whispered interpretation:
In whisper interpretation, the interpreter works with two or three people at a time. He whispers in the client’s ear what the speaker is speaking its purpose is to not disturb the people around and quietly convey the speech to the client in his understandable language. This is not very common form of interpretation used comparing to simultaneous or consecutive interpretation these days. It is also known as ‘chuchotage’ derived from a French meaning whispering targeting very small audience.
