There was a survey not so long ago that placed the Boston Market brand at the very top among the fast-casual chain restaurants. It’s not really surprising, with people factoring in the high food quality with the reasonable prices. Add the pleasant vibes that help diners relax, and the friendly attitude of the staff, and it’s a heck of dining experience.
But as you might expect, what kind of experience you get at Boston Market depends a lot on what you order. And there may be a few items in the Boston Market Menu which may not be your best choices. It’s not that any of them are terrible (at least not for everyone), but it’s that you have many other better choices.
So, which menu items at Boston Market may not be all that good? If you want to make sure you enjoy yourself here, then you might want to avoid the following items:
Fresh Steamed Vegetables
A lot of health-conscious people (including your dietician) might object to having this item on this list of disappointments. But this isn’t a list of the healthiest items you can order at Boston Market. If that was the case, this one definitely comes in first. You get the nutrients intact because they steam the vegetables, and you only get 60 calories.
But the problem here is that this isn’t a list of the healthiest items. We’re focusing on flavor here, and you’re not getting much flavor with the plate of zucchini, carrots, and broccoli. It’s true that it’s not completely flavorless, as the plate is seasoned with olive oil plus salt and pepper. But that seasoning is not just enough.
At least, not in comparison with what other side dish you might get. Compared to the other side dishes, this order of steamed veggies may be healthy, but it’s boring.
Sweet Potato Casserole
Sure, there are some people who actually like sweet potato casserole. But it’s not really a concept that’s accepted by many diners. Even people who love sweet potatoes aren’t usually fans of the sweet potato casserole.
Not that this is a flavorless option, like the fresh steamed vegetables. That’s not the case at all. In fact, it’s much too sweet, and that’s the real problem with this side dish. You’re actually getting marshmallows, which are basically puffs of pure sugar, along with the already sweet potatoes, and that’s just a lot of sweetness. And when you factor in the addition of brown sugar, vanilla, and molasses, it’s really just too much sweetness.
If you’re a fan of sweet potato casserole, then go ahead and enjoy it. But if you haven’t tried it yet, just take our word for it. It’s basically a dessert masquerading as a side dish—if you’re feeling adventurous, then eat this at the end of the meal!
Salted Caramel Lava Cake
On paper, this seems like a fantastic concept. Start with caramel, and then add salt. That sounds good, right? Then set the caramel in a warm cake, and it feels almost perfect. It even looks terrific.
But the proof is in the pudding, and the taste is just…not great at all. The salt in theory should have balanced out the flavor more, but that didn’t happen. Instead, each bite seems overwhelmingly sweet.
What this means is that this might work for dessert, but only if you’re really craving for a lot of sugar. But there are other dessert options that just works better. This is so sweet that even if you share the cake with a buddy, it’s just hard to finish. And there’s just something wrong when a dessert is difficult to finish because of its sweetness.
Creamed Spinach
Okay, this is another green stuff that you might think is healthy. But while spinach is good for you, the other additions reduce the healthiness factor of the greens. They cover the spinach here with some cream cheese, butter, and parmesan cheese.
So, if you’re not really a fan of the taste of spinach, all that cream should at least add to the taste, right? For some, that might be true. But though the taste is decent, many also consider this a bit on the bland side. And when you compare the taste to the other side dishes, that’s also true as well.
Meatloaf Sandwich
Some people really love meatloaf. That’s probably why the folks at Boston Market came up with this meatloaf sandwich concept, as a way to entice you to get some meatloaf for lunch.
But if you want meatloaf, then just go with the meatloaf. It only costs $9.40 for a Homestyle Meatloaf, and it’s not too bad at all. It can even taste nice when you cover it with sauces.
The thing is, the meatloaf meat is actually quite dry. And when that dry meatloaf is paired with the dry bread, the result isn’t really all that appetizing at all. It just amplifies the dryness.
So, enjoy your meal at Boston Market. And if you want to make sure you’ll enjoy your meal, try to avoid these disappointing menu items altogether!
