Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world. In the United States alone, it leads to one death every 36 seconds.

An umbrella term, it describes a number of conditions including heart failure, atherosclerosis, arrhythmia, and stroke.

The good news is that it can be prevented. For one thing, it helps to keep your cholesterol and blood pressure under control.

Certain medications such as beta-blockers can help as well.

Want to learn more about how that works? If so, be sure to read on—we’ll be going over how to prevent cardiovascular disease below!

What Are Beta Blockers?

Beta-blockers are a class of medication that blocks the effects of epinephrine, a hormone that triggers your body’s fight-or-flight response. In doing so, your heart will work less hard.

As it is, they’re generally used to treat angina, heart failure, arrhythmia. Not only that, but they can help prevent future heart attacks in those who’ve had a heart attack.

Take Bystolic, for instance, it’s often used to treat high blood pressure, which will lower your risk of having a heart attack. To learn more about how Bystolic works, visit 90 Days Meds.

Other Benefits Of Beta Blockers

Beta-blockers do more than just prevent cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that they can also protect the bones by preventing the kidneys from excreting calcium.

Not only that, but they also block stress hormones that can otherwise cause your bone to thin over time. With that said, they are not a first-line treatment for osteoporosis. If anything, it’s just an extra benefit of taking these drugs.

Side Effects of Beta Blockers

Beta-blockers can cause a variety of side effects such as fatigue, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache. In some cases, it can also lead to shortness of breath or depression.

Note: People with asthma shouldn’t take these medications as they can trigger attacks. Similarly, they’re not recommended for those with diabetes as they can affect the control of blood sugar.

Other Ways On How to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

Aside from taking beta-blockers, there are other things that you can do to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. For one thing, it helps to stay at a healthy weight.

Not only that, but you want to eat a healthy diet. More specifically, you want to limit your intake of sodium and saturated fats.

Exercise also helps. Not only will it strengthen your heart, but it’ll also improve your circulation. On top of all that, it can help you lower your blood pressure and cholesterol, both of which will reduce your risk of heart disease.

And for those who smoke, it’s best to quit. The same goes for alcohol—you don’t want to drink too much as it can increase your blood pressure.

Understanding How Beta Blockers Work

And there you have it—a short guide on how to prevent cardiovascular disease with beta-blockers. As you can see, they can help prevent a number of conditions!
