Now that the world has come with various innovations there are lots of fun activities at our disposal. Out of all such options, playing games is considered the best pastime. Games also strengthen the bond you have with your friends and family. Due to the everyday hustle, it becomes difficult to catch up with all your friends and family at regular intervals. Thanks to online platforms like GetMega, you can invite your friends and family to play diverse games. With its audio/video features, you can easily interact with your members even from a distant location. The app hosts various games, but the most ideal one to play in big groups with friends and families is the Rummy 500.
Rummy 500 is a popular version of the conventional Rummy game that can be played by 2-8 players. This game also has many other names such as Persian Rummy, Michigan Rummy and Pinochle Rummy. Unlike other Rummy games where points carry a negative value, a player who gets 500+ points in this game is declared a winner. Each player gets 13 cards. In 500 Rummy, cards that are properly melded help you collect points. However, cards that do not belong to any meld deduct your points. Rummy 500 is surely a big group game that allows all players to draw more than one card to reach a card lower down the pile that they require. This game also helps people to improve their strategic thinking.
Here we are going to discuss the game of 500 Rummy in detail. You may also visit the GetMega blog page for more information.
How to play the game?
Rummy 500 is played with a standard deck of 52 cards or 54 cards including 2 jokers. Based on the number of players, the number of cards is dealt. Like any other Rummy game, Rummy 500 also players meld the cards by making runs or sets of 3 or 4 cards. You can also practice similar games on GetMega app to get a better understanding of the game.
Players in Rummy 500
In this version of Rummy, the number of cards and decks change depending on the number of players. For 2-4 players, one deck of cards is used. If the game is played among 3-5 players two decks of cards must be used. In the case of 3-8 players, 7 cards are given to each player. However, for some games, where 5-8 players are participating, 6 cards are dealt. As we know the more the merrier, the game will be more exciting if you invite your friends and families to play it. The benefit of playing in large groups is that you can select a dealer before the game starts. When everyone is ready for the game, each player would draw a random card from the face-down deck. The person who has the lowest card becomes the next dealer.
500 Rummy rules
In Rummy 500 players are allowed to take the top card of the stock or any other card from the discard pile. A player during his/her turn can lay down the melded cards after drawing. However, remember to do that before some discards a card. Further, a player can lay down a group of cards or add cards to the already laid down group. In Rummy 500 a player must discard one card from his/her hand. The joker card may represent any card of the player’s choice. Joker can also represent cards that are already used in a meld. The game ends when a player has melded and presented all the cards or there are no remaining cards in the stockpile. In 500 Rummy, no bonus is given to the player who finishes first.
Discard pile
So far we have learned that a player can choose any card from the discard pile and not just the top card. However, while drawing a card from the discard pile you must take care of all the cards on top. Also, remember to use the card as soon as you draw. You can either use it to lay down a meld or you can add it to an already existing meld on the table.
Aces and their values
As also mentioned in GetMega’s blogs, aces in Rummy can either mean the highest card or the lowest card. In some games, players are allowed to make 1 sequence where the Ace is both high and low. If “going around the corner” is not allowed then the players must make separate runs.
When the Ace is used as a high card the value becomes 15 points and when it is used as a low card the value becomes 9 points. However, if you want you can keep the low ace card value as 1 point or 5 points.
500 Rummy card values and scores
The ace card used as the high card has 15 points. Face cards have 10 points. Joker, used as a wildcard, has 15 points. Points of other cards are the same as face cards. Finally, the ace card used as the low card contains 9 points. To make the game easy, you can also keep the value of the low Ace card as 5 points.
When one round of this game gets over, the points are summed up. Other players sum up their hands and deduct that from their total score for that round. But, if the round ends before the stockpile is over players are not required to reduce the value of their hands.
Though Rummy 500 has its own complexities, it certainly improves the thought process of the individuals. Thus, if you want to create a strong bond with your large group of friends and families, consider playing Rummy 500 on the GetMega app.
