Shanann Watts, a pregnant mother of two, and her daughters, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste, were murdered in 2018, sending shockwaves across the country. The crimes were terrible and senseless, and the fact that Shannan’s husband and the children’s father, Chris Watts, confessed to them just added to the pain. Starting on Wednesday, September 30, the roughly hour-and-a-half feature will be accessible to stream. For the Watts family, the summer of 2018 should have been a happy one. Husband Chris Watts, then 33, and wife Shanann, 34, had just learned they were expecting a son to join their two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, in their Frederick, Colorado, suburban home, approximately 27 miles north of Denver. As Chris Watts worked as an operator at Anadarko Petroleum and Shanann traveled for the nutrition supplement firm Le-Vel, their lives revolved around their daughters, as seen by Shanann’s frequent Facebook updates.
Chris Watts personality type:
Most interviews with Chris Watts focus on his devotion to his wife Shanann and grieving over her loss. But what about his personality type? Did he murder his family because he was a narcissist, or did he fall under a similar category? Was it a blend of characteristics that led him to kill Shanann and their children? Psychologists have opinions on which personality types are most likely to kill. For example, Otto Kroeger, co-author of Type Talk, believes an ESTJ like Chris Watts would not have murdered because someone else had already destroyed her rules for living—but if she murdered out of anger or revenge, then yes.
If he had narcissistic tendencies or any other type with negative behaviors, Chris Watts might have been able to do it. There could be several reasons why he might have committed these murders. Shanann Watts’ friend Nickole Atkinson left her off at her Frederick, Colorado home at 2 a.m. on August 13, 2018, after a business trip they had made together. However, when Nickole tried to contact Shanann a few hours later, she was unable to do so — and after Shanann missed an ob-gyn appointment, she became concerned. Shanann’s husband, Chris, was at work, so Nickole decided to phone him. She also contacted the authorities. Even there were no signs of foul play when the police arrived at the Watts’ home that afternoon. They did discover Shanann’s car and all of her items. Many people speculate about it, but no one knows for sure.
The investigation
Chris’s experience evolved dramatically in the days that followed. He initially told authorities he had no idea where Shanann, Bella, or Celeste were, and he began making public appearances to ask for help locating his missing family. Meanwhile, the local police department, the CBI, and the FBI were poring over Chris’s phone records, revealing that he had been having an affair with one of his Anadarko Petroleum coworkers. Chris then failed a polygraph test on August 15 (two days after his wife and daughters vanished), and that’s when everything changed.
Chris Watts promised that if he could talk to his father first, he would tell the police the truth. Investigators took a chance and let him, and it paid off: Chris confessed to his father that he had murdered his wife. Investigators soon discovered Shanann, Bella, and Celeste’s remains at an Anadarko Petroleum site, with Shanann’s body in a shallow grave and the two girls’ bodies in oil tanks, just as Chris had claimed.

One count of unlawful pregnancy termination, and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body. He was then sentenced to five life terms for the murders (three consecutive and two concurrent), plus 84 years for the other offenses. Even though Chris Watts had supplicate guilty to all three killings, he was yet to reveal the whole tale of is to come out on August 13, 2018.
Chris, however, disclosed the truth in a five-hour follow-up interview with prison investigators: Chris strangled Shanann to death the following day after a fight with her over his desire to divorce. He claimed that Bella and Celeste awoke and came to ask him what was wrong while he was trying to bring his wife’s body downstairs. He then carried the girls into his truck along with their mother’s body, drove to the oil site, and suffocated the girls one by one before disposing of the three bodies.
