Rum baba is a cupcake or cake made of yeast pastry, to which raisins and sometimes candied fruits are added. It is not difficult to notice her close relationship with the Easter cake. However, unlike Easter, the rum woman gets stale very quickly. No wonder: the standard recipe requires that the finished cake be dried before impregnation.

Such a story does not stand up to any criticism. Firstly, at first, the woman was soaked not with rum at all, but with Madeira or a mixture of other wines. Secondly, well, would the king try a spoiled dish?
So the option with dried bread looks much more plausible. But there are several versions here too. According to one of them, Stanislav Leshchinsky, being a noble sweet tooth, had very bad teeth. And for some part of his life, he lived practically without them. So it was hard for him to eat hard Alsatian cookies or festive German bread, but he wanted to. And his pastry chef began to soak hard cookies and other dry pastries in sweet Tokai so that his Majesty could amuse his stomach as much as he wanted.

And so successfully that it began to be called Polish Easter bread, and a little later – baba. However, the name is also sometimes attributed to Leshchinsky himself. They say that the king was fond of the tales of Scheherazade, and most of all he liked the story of Ali Baba. And since the original shape of the cupcake vaguely resembled an oriental turban, it was named after a favorite fairy-tale character.
Travel to France
Poland has never been a trendsetter of culinary fashion, so it is quite possible that over time Polish Easter bread would have remained that way. But in 1725 Leszczynski married his daughter, Maria Leszczynska, to the French King Louis. And together with her, Leszczynski’s chef, Nicholas Storcher, went to the French court.
